Year 9 visit to the Science Museum
In the second week of June 2015 all four Year 9 History groups took part in a day trip to consolidate their knowledge and understanding of Units 1 and 2 of the Edexcel GCSE SHP examined units and to practise their Tallis Habits. The Science and Art of Medicine Gallery was explored and in particular the sections on the Roman, medieval, Renaissance, Scientific Revolution, Industrial Revolution and the 20th Century. Themes concerning the impact of ideas, changing explanations of the causes of illness, changing treatments and public health were focussed upon with the artefacts ranging from Galen's theories, the illustrations of Andreas Vesalius and William Harvey, Louis Pasteur's scientific equipment and the development of the NHS all revealing their contribution to the development of Medicine over 2,000 years of Medical History. Bring on the Unit 1 mock exam on Medicine 50-2000. Finally the History of Surgery Gallery was investigated and the displays revealing reconstruction on Naval surgery in 1800, the development of anaesthetics, antiseptics and blood transfusions by the time of the First World war 1914-18. Bring on the Unit 3 mock exam on Surgery 1840-1918.
