In a nutshell. What is historical significance? The development of the historical second order concept of significance is also indispensable to developing knowledge and understanding of the past and should be an integral part of the History Threshold Concepts adopted by the department. It is suggested that a possible starting point for exploration of this History Threshold Concepts could be: History is about thinking about the importance of events in relation to others (significance) but the extent to which an event is judged significant to others can vary. Significance is thus a matter of the value that one makes about a past event.
This is an area which as received a plethora of pedagogical consideration by the history teaching community. In respect of thinking through the second order concept change the HA Website communicates that: “Equipping students to make well-reasoned judgements about the historical significance of past events is one way of alerting them to the value and purpose of studying the past. But teaching about this disciplinary concept also involves developing young people’s understanding that historical significance is not an enduring or unchanging characteristic of any particular event. It is a contingent quality that depends on the perspective from which that event is subsequently viewed. |
