Enquiry 4.
How have people struggled to make the world a better place by 2020?
Overview 1. Decolonisation. What was the global imperial picture by the early 20th Century, and how did this change? From the late 1400s onwards, Europeans were able to expand their navigation of the world as they had access to new and improved ships. They wanted to expand their power into new parts of the world for political and economic reasons. This led to the growth of competition between European empires. By 1800, Europe and its colonies and ex-colonies covered just over half the land surface of the world; By 1914 this had gone up to nearly 85%, . yet within little more than thirty years, these great global empires had almost all collapsed.
