Throughout the Middle Ages, the Muslim world was more advanced and more civilised than Christian Western Europe, which learned a huge amount from its neighbour. In this unit student will use their inquisitiveness to investigate the development of Islamic civilisation from 622AD and its impact on Europe. |

These short films are from the BBC series, History of Early Civilisations - Islam. This series introduces different aspects of life in the Islamic Golden Age, circa AD900. Choose an aspect of life that you are particularly interested in and write a report as if you were a journalist describing and explaining it. If you feel confident then do a comparison with Britain today by identifying similarities and differences.

Two Islamic merchants, Jafar and Salma, are signed up for this makeover show parody. Pupils are introduced to traditional male and female attire and fashion accessories as a merchant and his wife prepare to take up a prestigious invitation to the House of Wisdom in Baghdad. Bonus fashion tips fill in background to the society, such as the importance of modesty, how to keep cool, and following the teachings of the Qur'an.
