On 27th January 2022 Tallis remembers Holocaust Memorial Day.
During this period students will be considering their reflections on Holocaust remembrance from last year and the importance of tolerance and celebration of diversity in our school and wider communities. The following four points outline what you are guided to do.
- Students should watch and consider the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust ; Learning from the Past video before watching and considering Ms Evans's Holocaust Remembrance Day Assembly on the PowerPoint below. Students should think hard about what they have learnt about Holocaust and Genocide remembrance and the reasons why it is important to celebrate diversity. Finally they should watch and think about the "Stopping Hate Speech" video.
- During the week leading up to Thursday 27th January many organisations and the country at large will be remembering the 77th Anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz and the Holocaust more generally. Students should think hard and make a connection between this remembrance and why it is important to celebrate diversity today.
- Finally whilst your thinking enjoy a performance of ‘Benedictus’, from The Armed Man by Karl Jenkins.

This year's theme is One Day. Miss Evans has given assemblies on Josef Perl, and the single days when his life changed dramatically. His story is one of tremendous sadness and trauma, but it is also a story of escape, survival and hope. Josef's ability to forgive and find the goodness in life was an inspiration to many others when he began speaking to school students to tell his story, including Miss Evans, at the age of 14. Josef died, aged 91, in 2018, but his story is not forgotten. Soon, there will be no more Holocaust survivors to tell us their stories, and it is our duty to speak on their behalf. Not to do so would be an insult to their suffering, and gives Holocaust deniers ground. Between 2013 and 2018, hate crime in the UK doubled. In the words of Arthur Benjamin, who wrote up Josef's story, 'When deeds of this nature occur, there are no 'innocent bystanders'; we are all participants in some way.' We must speak up and challenge hatred when we see it. Maybe, One Day, such hatred and atrocities will end.

Finally here is a performance of ‘Benedictus’, from The Armed Man by Karl Jenkins. It pays homage to the victims of the Kosovo crisis, and is in truth an ‘anti-war’ piece. It seems appropriate as an homage to victims of conflict. I hope you like it, and that it offers inspiration for bringing your Holocaust Remembrance Day Activities to a close.
