Conflict and Remembrance - Dominant and Alternative narratives
Period 2...Peter Jackson's film and preparation for Last Post.
Exploring Dominant Narratives
During this period students will be returning to Tutor Groups to consider WW 1 dominant narratives.
1 At the start of the period 2 tutors will explain to their groups that film maker Peter Jackson has taken the IWM’s original First World War film footage and archive sound interview recordings to create a new film that he says is “not the usual film that you would expect on the First World War”. “It’s the faces, it’s the people that come to life in this film…the human beings that were actually there”. The film has been co-commissioned by IWM and 14-18 Now especially to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Armistice that brought the First World War to a close. The name of the film is "They shall not grow old". 2 All students except for Year 7-9 will then watch the film that Peter Jackson as made for 30 minutes, from 1 hour into the film until 1 hour 33 which is the end. Then students will be asked to record their thoughts about Remembrance on the Remembrance Passports. 3 Year 7-9 will need to watch either of the the two Youtube videos "Letters from the Trenches" of twenty minutes each found below, and then have a class discussion about what it makes them think about who, what and why this conflict and its victims should be remembered. 4 In addition from 10:45am students will watch a special powerpoint video. This powerpoint gives a powerful visual stimulus to the questions of who, how and why we remember those who have participated in the 1914-18 conflict and in conflicts since. |
